This guide covers fixing a flat sign plate to a wall using stand-off connectors (barrel locators) to create an elegant, contemporary finish. The workflow: position and mark, drill/plug, fix stand-off bases, add middle sections, present the panel, and secure the fronts.
Our Component Shop contains our range of stand-off connectors, available for next same day despatch.
Confirm substrate (brick, block, stone, timber, plasterboard) and choose appropriate fixings.
Check your panel hole centres match the stand-off pattern.
Protect finished faces (soft cloth/film) during handling.
Wear suitable PPE.
Tape measure, pencil, spirit level
Drill/driver and bits (masonry/wood/metal as required)
Wall plugs (where fixing into masonry)
Screws to suit wall plugs/bases
Stand-off connectors (backs, middles, fronts)
Screwdriver/driver bits; hex key if applicable
Cleaning wipes/cloth
1. Position & mark
Offer the panel to the wall at final height. Use a spirit level and mark the fixing points through the panel holes. Low-tack tape behind the marks helps keep the wall clean.
2. Drill & (if required) plug
Remove the panel. Drill to the correct diameter/depth for your wall plugs or screws, then insert plugs appropriate to the substrate and screw size.
3. Fix stand-off backs
Screw the back sections of the stand-off connectors to the wall on each marked point. Ensure they are square and firmly seated.
4. Fit the middle sections
Thread/screw the middle sections onto each back. Tighten hand-firm; avoid over-torque that might misalign the stand-offs.
5. Present the panel & secure fronts
Offer the panel so its holes slide over the middle sections, then screw on the fronts to clamp the panel. Bring all fronts up evenly, then nip each one snug. Do not overtighten. The sign is now complete.
Template once, repeat fast: Make a card/acrylic drilling template for common sizes to speed accurate marking.
Face protection: Keep the panel’s protective film on until final clean-down to avoid swirl marks.
Tile caution: Pilot brittle surfaces (e.g., tiles) with a small bit; step up sizes to prevent chips and cracks.
External durability: Use stainless fixings and sealed stand-offs outdoors to minimise staining and water ingress.
Thermal movement: On sun-exposed installs, tighten fronts evenly and avoid excessive clamp force to prevent panel bowing.#
All stand-off fronts seated uniformly; gaps consistent.
Panel sits level and parallel to wall with no rocking.
No face damage; protective film removed after install.
Fixings appropriate to substrate; all debris/swarf cleared.
Wipe with a non-abrasive cloth and mild detergent. Avoid harsh solvents. Inspect annually for loosening, corrosion, or substrate movement; re-set & tighten fronts if needed.
