This guide covers fixing a flat sign plate directly to a wall using screws and (where needed) wall plugs. The workflow: position and level, mark, drill/plug, present the panel, and screw.
Check the substrate (brick, block, stone, timber, plasterboard) and choose suitable fixings.
Protect finished faces during handling (soft cloth or film).
Wear appropriate PPE.
Tape measure, pencil, spirit level
Drill/driver and suitable bits (masonry/wood/metal as required)
Appropriate wall plugs (if fixing into masonry)
Screws (head style/finish to suit specification)
Screwdriver/driver bit, countersink (optional)
Cleaning wipes/cloth
1. Position & level
Offer the panel to the wall at final height. Use a spirit level and mark the fixing holes through the panel. (Tip: low-tack tape behind the marks keeps the wall clean.)
2. Drill & (if required) plug
Remove the panel. Drill the marks to the correct diameter/depth and insert wall plugs appropriate to the substrate and screw size.
2. Present the panel
Place the panel back over the prepared holes, aligning each hole with its plug/pilot.
3. Fix off
Drive the screws until snug. Avoid over-tightening to prevent panel bowing or surface damage. Where aesthetics matter, match screw head finish/caps to the panel.
4. Final checks
Confirm level and alignment, remove protection, and clean down the face. The sign is now complete.
Use a drilling template when repeating the same panel size to speed up marking (available on request).
Pilot-drill brittle façades (e.g., tiles) with a small bit first to avoid chips.
For external installs, consider stainless screws and caps to minimise future staining. We offer a range of Colour Coded Snap-Caps to protect flat-bottom screw heads and complement your panel finish.
Where expansion is a concern (sun-exposed aluminium panels), avoid overtightening and allow micro-movement.
All fixings seated uniformly and heads aligned (if visible).
Panel sits flat with no rocking or bowing.
Level and vertical.
Wipe with a non-abrasive cloth and mild detergent. Avoid solvents. Inspect annually for loose fixings, corrosion, or substrate movement.
