Top tips for sign maintenance

Steps for longer lasting signage

Sign maintenance is important. Your outdoor signage is a visual representation of your business. It is one of the first things many potential customers see, and it creates the first impression of your company before they step foot through the door.

To maintain a good impression of your business your signs need to be taken care of regularly to increase their life span and your ROI. Below are some sign maintenance tips to help take care of your outdoor business signage.

Shelter your signage

If possible, it is beneficial to place a shade or shelter above your signage. This will help increase its life significantly because it is protected from rain, snow and general wear and tear.

You can make sure your signage is sheltered with a small roof, decoration pieces or with natural elements, such as a large tree. This may seem like a big investment, but it will help protect your sign from becoming damaged, and in turn, help you save money.

Electrical signage maintenance

If you have electrical signage, this should be inspected and cleaned out regularly. Debris, insects and dirt can get built up inside of the system and block the drainage holes. If It is not maintained often, then the standing water inside can easily damage the electrics.

Contact a signage maintenance company to inspect your electrical signage on a regular basis to ensure the longevity of the sign and electrics inside.

Signage foundation

If your sign is freestanding, be sure to check the foundations regularly and look for standing water near the base of the sign. There should not be any water puddling up at the foundation of the sign. If there is, try to create a trench near the sign to direct the water away.

Standing water can cause structural problems and a loss of stability in the foundation. If this continues to happen, look into getting the foundation levelled or slightly raised to ensure there will be no more water build-up.

Dirt

It is inevitable that outdoor signs are going to accumulate layers of debris and dirt due to being exposed to the weather. Most of the time, signs are being hit with rain, dirty leaves, dusty wind and other natural elements.

To prevent the build-up of dirt, signage should be cleaned regularly to make sure that it looks visually appealing and professional.

Lighting

Signage with lighting in or above needs checking often because they can burn out. Having burnt out lights in signage can make the business look unprofessional and not very well kept, especially in the dark.

General checks

Other things you can do to maintain your signage is to check any brackets or fixings the sign is attached to. If they are loose or don’t feel right, either tighten them up or ask a professional to do so. If the sign keeps coming loose, then look into replacing the fixings to prevent any irreversible damage.

It is important to keep on top of the maintenance of your business signage to ensure it is clean, clear and well presented. Use the tips above to make your sign look as good as ever.
