Rack ‘em up – big changes behind the scenes at Ashby

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the factory. The usual workload has kept everyone on their toes as ever, so we thought we’d completely re-design the place as well. Well, they’re only happy when they’re busy.

There’s method in the madness

To be fair, there was a couple of days where Steve, our General Manager thought it was more like madness in the method, but despite some long days and hard graft, it’s all worked out swimmingly due in the main to forward planning.
Read on to find out what we’ve been up to and how it benefits our customers.

Racking our Brains

Our ethos is to be consistent with pricing for the trade. The raw costs of aluminium are going up and there are always fluctuations in composite, acrylic, polystyrene, packaging and carriage pricing. To avoid passing on regular price hikes to our customers, we find that optimising productivity allows us to put off any increases for a considerable time.

Factory optimisation

When we get a delivery of aluminium we get 20+ tonnes of the stuff. As well as all the composite and acrylic we stock. The factory floor was nearly at capacity, so we took the decision to build upwards.

Behold – high-bay racking!

At the risk of sounding like a bunch of nerds – check out this for fabulous! Installing high bay racking has increased our useable floor space to fulfil more orders. It’s already done wonders for time efficiency.

More changes

We have also installed a mezzanine level which when completed will be a protected welding bay. The there’s the absolute brute of a new extractor unit to keep the space free of aluminium dust.

Not so nerve-racking

The net result of all these changes is that the process of fulfilling an order takes less time, so we can do more of them.
