This guide explains how to install a suspended plate sign using our wall-mounted hanging bracket, sleeve anchors and anchor bolts, before linking the plate with chain and shackles for the final hang.
A downloadable version of this guide is available at the top-right of this page.
Check the wall substrate (brick, block, concrete) and select appropriate sleeve anchors and anchor bolt sizes accordingly.
Confirm final hanging height and clearance for the suspended plate.
Pro tip: our itemised order confirmations have all item weights listed
Wear suitable PPE (gloves, eye protection, dust mask) and isolate any nearby electrical services.
Drill and masonry bit sized to the sleeve anchors
Spirit level & marker/pencil
Spanner or socket wrench for the anchor bolts
Sleeve anchors + matching anchor bolts
Chain (if using) and shackles for the plate-to-bracket connection (chain not supplied by Ashby).
1. Mark your fixings
Offer up the bracket position on the wall. Use a spirit level to ensure it is level, then mark the hole centres on the wall.
2. Drill for the anchor bolts
Drill the marked holes to suit your anchor bolt and sleeve anchor specification.
3. Insert sleeve anchors
Push the sleeve anchors into the drilled holes so they sit flush and ready to receive the bracket.
4. Mount the hanging bracket
Slot the hanging bracket over the sleeve anchors and tighten the anchor bolts to secure the bracket firmly to the wall.
5. Hang the plate
Join the sign plate to the hanging bracket using chain and shackles, ensuring equal chain lengths for level presentation. (Chain not supplied; shackles required.)
Confirm the plate is level, fixings are tight, and the plate swings freely without fouling nearby surfaces or fittings. The suspended plate sign is now complete.
Installer tips (best practice)
Edge protection: If the plate is finished (e.g., powder coated or vinyl-faced), protect edges during handling to prevent scuffs.
Corrosion control: Use stainless or suitably plated fixings in external or coastal environments.
Load path: Verify that the chain, shackles and bracket are rated for the plate’s weight, including wind loading where applicable.
Inspect chains, shackles and wall fixings at routine service intervals (e.g., quarterly) for wear, corrosion or loosening.
Re-tighten anchor bolts as needed and replace any worn hardware.
