Not your run-of-the-mill signage project – case study

Sign Select Waterford has created six stunning visual displays using Ashby manufacturing and technical design services.

The displays utilise Ashby extruded components, specially fabricated aluminium sections and custom routed acrylic (complete with coloured LEDs and controller), to provide a visually striking display in a darkened exhibition room at Waterford’s Medieval Museum.

The museum (one of three museums known as the Viking triangle), tells the story of Waterford during the medieval period – it is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Struan Bickerton, Director at Sign Select, said, “The museum has a pretty unique feel to it – it’s a historic building with a great deal of character. When they approached us, it was crucial for us to provide the customer with something that fit the feel of the building. The new displays feature a slight frame, but enable the edge lit illuminated acrylic to make the displays the centrepiece for the room”.

The displays have a central column (Ashby Modular extrusion) with five sections of routed, engraved acrylic projecting at 90 degrees from either side – LEDs are mounted within the extrusion which provides the edge lighting. The bottom sections comprise a bespoke aluminium frame, 5mm acrylic and two sign trays mounted in a bespoke, steel base with obscured casters.

Facilitating Facilities

Whilst Ashby is best known for manufacturing sign blanks, less standard and bespoke products also feature heavily in our manufacturing. The 30,000 square foot factory in Basingstoke accommodates a diverse range of machinery and 20 years in the sign industry provides the necessary expertise to design (from a technical standpoint), produce and finish specialist products.
