What is digital printing?
Digital printing is the process of printing digital-based images onto a range of different media. Digital printing is a newer printing process that involves using a computer to translate the digital-based image/design onto different media using formulas.
How does digital printing work?
Digital printing is when ink is printed directly onto media, and it is similar to how a home printer works but on a larger scale. Digital printers usually print in CMYK, which is made up of Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K).
The image is split into these different colours and prints as a set of percentages of each colour to make up the desired colours on the design/image on the print. For example, if you were to digitally print 100% magenta and 100% yellow, the colour will turn out to be red. These percentages vary across the whole print with very small sections making up each colour, revealing the image.
Advantages of digital printing for signs
In addition to providing aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching signage for your business, there is a range of benefits to digital printing signs.
Colour range – With digitally printed signage, the colour possibilities are endless…literally. The wide range of colours and hues available can make each and every individual sign unique with extreme clarity. This is great for specific logos and the unique colour scheme that you have created for your brand.
Affordability – Traditional methods of printing signage can take multiple layers of work, which can make it time-consuming. On the other hand, digital printing needs no significant preparation because there is no need for colour matching or creating printing plates.
With digital printing, everything happens in one singular process, which is a much more affordable option.
Durability – Digitally printed images have the ability to last a long time, and this is down to the specific inks collected. When printing designs on signs that are intended to be used outside for years and years, it is important that high-quality ink is used to make sure that the sign can face the elements without any form of damage or deterioration in quality.
Variety – Digital printing comes with the ability to print on a wide range of substrates, including synthetics, metallics, fabrics and more. This is great for those who would like their logo/design across a variety of media.
Customisable – Digital printing allows signage to be fully customisable to every specification, even on every individual print. In other forms of sign printing, it can be challenging to make the smallest change in a design. When digital printing, the design is saved and stored in a digital space, making it easier to enhance and edit when needed.
